Pride and Prejudice in its original form was entitled Firs Impressions and was begun in 1796. The following year, in 1797, it was refused by a publisher and only after undergoing a rigorous revision of text and change of name was it finally presented to the public becoming Austen’s best know book the hero, Darcy, is insufferably proud but his pride is broken when he sees himself through the eyes of the woman he loves, Elizabeth, who is prejudiced against him until she sees the person beneath the mask of arrogance. The comedy in the novel is the lightest and most sparkling Jane Austen ever wrote. Her writing is not dramatic in style or plot; but through the medium of ordinary conversation she conveys a world of human feelings with a subtlety that few in the history of literature have ever matched.
